I have been overweight my entire life but my weight skyrocketed after losing 4 family members within a year. I coped with pain the way that I dealt with everything in my life, by eating. I think in some way I was eating myself into an emotional coma so I wouldn’t have to feel anything.
NAME : Christina
BEFORE WEIGHT : 296
AFTER WEIGHT : 188
POUNDS LOST : 108
HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE? I was bullied all throughout elementary, middle, and high school. It went as far as the boys in my school voting me Homecoming Princess so they could laugh at me across the field. Naturally I developed major depression and anxiety and tried to shut myself off from everyone. I figured the world would be a better place without me in it. This went on until I got to college and realized there were some decent people who would like me for the person underneath the layers of fat.
WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? On my 23rd birthday my sister took a picture of me with a friend. When I looked at the picture I saw an almost 300 pound girl who was miserable and sad. I saw a girl who had given up on herself and was eating herself to death. I knew I had to make a change.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I had done Weight Watchers several times in my past and it always worked but I also always gave up. I decided to try again with a program I knew worked for me.
HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS? I had been on Weight Watchers for just a few weeks when I started to feel like I had finally started to take charge of my life. Being so overweight, the pounds started to fly off. I had lost 40 pounds before I even knew it.
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? About 6 months into my journey I started to feel sick. I went to my doctor and after lots of tests and appointments I was told I had an autoimmune disease. I was immediately thrown into a new regime of medications and infusions and I began to feel down on myself. My body hurts almost all the time and there were lots of days (still are some) where I didn’t really want to try. However I know that losing weight will only help me in the long run so each day I wake up with the attitude to be better than the day before.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? There have been lots of times where I have fallen off the wagon, I’m only human! Looking at pictures of myself before weight loss always gets me motivated to get back in control. I never want to see that sad girl again.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? I hit a major plateau when I started dating my current boyfriend. I was trying to balance the fun of dating and also not come off as a girl who was afraid to eat out. I wanted to enjoy all the new memories I was making but I was terrified of putting on weight. I ended up staying the same weight for 4 months. Finally I had a talk with him and told him that I needed to focus on my weight loss and I got right back in gear.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? It has taken about 2 years.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? My favorite NSV has been getting into single digit clothing. I started at a size 20/22 and in some brands I can wear a size 8 now. Another great NSV was being able to go to an amusement park and have zero fear if I would fit on the ride.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? Now I eat a lot of lean meats, fruits, and veggies. I also cook in the majority of the time where as before I relied on fast and easy takeout/drive thru meals.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I do a lot of walking now, I am limited on heavy exercise due to my autoimmune disease. Before it would take only food to get me off the couch.
