I was always “chubby” as a child and through my adolesence. It was after high school that my weight became a bigger problem. Living away from home I had free reign to whatever junk food I wanted (mom & dad never kept much in the house). My meals typically consisted of a boxed meal, frozen meal or cafeteria food. Then came the full time job. Breakfast was usually a breakfast sandwich and a Dr Pepper. Lunch was fast food and dinner, well…the same ole boxed or frozen meals. I gained over 100 pounds in just a few years.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY? I was experiencing frequent headaches and just “knew” I had high blood pressure (considering I weighed 283 pounds and and it runs in the family). Fortunately I was in the clear….for now. But how long would it take until the weight caught up with me?
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I spoke to my doctor about barbaric surgery. He said ” I will refer you to the best bariatric surgeon in the area….but I think you can do it on your own.” It meant a lot to me that he had that kind of confidence in me. I started courting my calories, making better food choices, and joined a gym. I lost about 40 pounds and was feeling great!
WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART? I got comfortable after the first 40. I loosened up on my eating habits and the weight started fluctuating. I was up and down 10-15 pounds. I was tired of being overweight and needed to do something else. I reached out to a nutritionist who basically told me the 100 calorie snack packs and the fat free this-or-that are fine and I knew that was wrong. I wanted to learn the right way to treat my body.
DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING? I can’t say that I’ve ever wanted to give up but the results I was seeing and the way I was feeling, along with my amazing support system of friends & family kept me going.
DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM? I have not hit any plateaus per say, but I’ve had weeks with less than desirable results (either gained or didn’t lose what I should have). I work with an amazing strength/conditioning/nutrition coach who immediately assesses my diet and workouts and adjusts them accordingly.
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT? A majority of my weight loss was between October 2014-present. I lost around 40 pounds (the. Was up and down) prior to October 2014 when I started working with my coach. since working with him I have lost over 100 pounds.
DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES? My most memorable non scale victories are: fitting in the stadium seats at Wrigley Field, racing with my 10 year old cousin, higher confidence, running an 8k, going from size XXL to S…Just to name a few.
WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? My diet now consists of meals packed with protein and veggies, with very few carbs. Previously my diet consisted of fast food, cafeteria food, processed food, etc. I ate whenever and whatever I wanted…no concept of portions, proteins, carbs.
HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I have done things I would have never been able to do. I have hiked in Hawaii, gone on a climbing/zip lining adventure, run 8k in the same amount of time that I “ran” my very first 5k, completed mud runs…
MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS
- Mind over matter. The mental part of weight loss can be just as challenging than the physical. Never let it wear you down.
- Listen to your body. If your body is telling you it needs a break then give it a break.
- Don’t be too proud to ask for help. There’s so much to learn about weight loss. It’s perfectly ok to reach out to somebody with questions.
