BEFORE THE CHANGE: I ate a lot of sweets.
I have a horrible sweet tooth. My typical meal was TV dinners, frozen food.
So I used to call myself a TV dinner connoisseur just because I knew which were the good ones and the bad ones.
So yeah, everything was frozen. Breakfast was cereal or a bagel or toast.
I mean it was just simple stuff but lunch was a TV dinner. I used to drink a lot of soda. And then for dinner was TV dinners or pasta and sometimes something from the drive-through.
THE TURNING POINT: I did not like the way I felt. Honestly, I just didn’t feel comfortable in my body. I was tired all the time. I was depressed for a long time and I was overworked. I worked crazy hours. So I was just in this cycle of work, work, work, work, work, sleep a couple of hours, work, work, work, work, work, sleep a couple of hours and I just had to get out of it because I knew that if I stayed on that track, I probably wouldn’t be here right now, honestly. Then, I just went out for a walk one day and I was just thinking like I have to change. I can’t be like this. I can’t be sad all the time. I can’t be depressed. I can’t feel tired all the time. And I remember this lady just passed by, this little lady. She couldn’t have even been 5 feet tall. She was just this cute little woman with her little pink t-shirt and she just walked by me and she was like, “Good for you. Good for you.” And that was it. I said, “That’s it. I have to change. I can’t stay like that anymore.” And then after that I really started getting serious. So a couple of months after I lived literally across the street from a gym so I had been looking at it. I was like, “You know, why don’t I just go? Why don’t I just walk in there and see maybe to work out?” And I did and I walked in and I joined and never turned back.
THE PLAN: I went vegetarian. I started reading a lot on nutrition and the good thing about vegetables, the health benefits and everything, and that really inspired me. I was like, “You know, this is good.” I started trying different things. I love arugula. I love spinach. I eat carrots, apples, oranges, mango. I bought a juicer and for me that’s the best thing in the world.
MY BEST WORKOUT: My favorite thing in the whole world is spinning. I love spinning. It’s kind of weird because I have this unnatural love of spinning. I love it, maybe because I used to love riding bike when I was younger. I took my first class and I thought I was going to die when I left because it was just so wonderful. And yeah, everything hurt. Everything hurt. But it was great.
REWARDS OF HARD WORK: My time (on the obstacle course) was horrible but I didn’t care. To me the big thing was just getting through it and finishing it and I did.
TOOLS OF MY SUCCESS: SparkPeople.com. A gym membership. A vegetarian diet packed with fruits and veggies. A juicer.
