70 Pounds Lost: Losing weight and Gaining Confidence

Elizabeth Lost 70 Pounds

I have been overweight since the 4th grade. Girls weren’t always nice to me and school and everyone always had a boyfriend but me so I turned to food. It was comforting.

HOW DID YOUR WEIGHT AFFECT ANY ASPECT(S) OF YOUR LIFE?  My weight has controlled almost every aspect of my life. I hated picture, I hated shopping for clothes, I hated being in public, and even sitting down in a chair was uncomfortable. I got short of breath just walking short distances.

WHAT WAS THE “TURNING POINT” THAT GOT YOU STARTED ON YOUR WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY?  One of the nurses I worked with was moving out of state and we went and had coffee one morning after work. She snapped a picture of us and when I saw myself next to her I was completely mortified. I cried the whole way home and begged her not to post it. The next day I went to Old Navy to get an outfit and the 2x shirts were too tight. I sat down in the dressing room and cried for about 20 minutes. I signed up for Weight Watchers right there in that dressing room.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED?  I started with Weight Watchers and I absolutely loved it. It’s define I’ll a slower process, but it had completely changed my relationship with food and given me the tools I need to make healthy choices and continue on this daily journey.

HOW LONG AFTER YOU STARTED DID YOU BEGIN TO SEE RESULTS OF YOUR WEIGHT LOSS EFFORTS?  Within 4 weeks I had lost 15 pounds strictly with dieting. I couldn’t see it in the mirror, but my clothes no longer suffocated my body.

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART?  The biggest challenge was doing it alone and my work schedule. I am a nurse and when I started I was working night shif the. Snacking on very unhealthy foods was the norm so sticking to plan was tough! I didn’t have a friend to support me along the way and lose weight with me and that was always tough.

DID YOU EVER WANT TO GIVE UP? WHAT KEPT YOU GOING?  There were and still are several times I want to give up. I don’t think anyone has ever started a weightloss journey ans hadn’t had ato least one time where they were just done with it all. It’s the toughest thing physically and mentally I’ve ever done. My daughter and my husband keep going every single day. Being able to run and play with my daughter and keep up with her energy level is the greatest reward.

DID YOU HIT ANY WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAUS? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?  Oh the plateaus!! Those are the times I really wanted to quit. I would work SO HARD two weeks straight and not lose a single pound. I would pull out that picture of me at the coffee shop and then see my daughter and I would be reminded of why I’m doing this.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE YOU TO LOSE MOST OF THE WEIGHT?  I lost the majority in the first year and a half.

DID YOU HAVE ANY NON-SCALE VICTORIES?  Non scale victories are my favorite!! From seeing pant sizes I haven’t seen since middle school to never having to shop in the plus size section again to wearing stripes and clothes from a boutique that stopped at a size large. The list goes on!

WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY DIET LOOK LIKE COMPARED TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? My portions are a lot smaller and contain more protein and not as much processed food.

HOW DOES YOUR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY COMPARE TO WHEN YOU WERE HEAVIER? I can run 2-3 miles without stopping now where before I could barely walk from a parking lot into a store without being compelelty winded. Now I LOVE lifting weights, too! I’d rather lift weights over cardio any day!

MY WEIGHT LOSS TIPS & TRICKS

  1. Take LOTS of before pictures. It’s so fun to watch your hard work play out in transformation pictures.
  2. Love yourself through every stage.
  3. There will be obstacles. There will be days you want to quit and there will be weeks you stay on track and bust your butt only to see the scale not move. Forget the scale. When you work hard and eat right you WILL see changes no matter what the scale may say.
  4. This is a journey. This isn’t a quick fix and it isn’t another diet to try. Find what works for YOU and go for it.
  5. Treat yourself. Set small goals and when you meet each goal do something special just for you! Having small galls to work towards makes it a lot easier!
